Hilary Knight’s Stage Struck World
About the project
April 25 – October 14, 2017
Hilary Knight may be best known as the illustrator of the American classic Eloise, but he cites the performing arts as the single greatest influence on his life and career. As a child, Knight was fascinated by the circus and could not get enough of Broadway. His artist parents then introduced him to musicals with Jumbo in 1935. For the first time, Hilary Knight’s stage-struck life was the subject of a comprehensive exhibition celebrating his work in the theater, including his iconic Broadway posters.
I worked closely with Mr. Knight to create an eye-catching design, including a circus wall mural with a motorized leg, a poster wall, and a recreation of displays from Mr. Knight’s home. I also produced two oral history videos for the exhibition, which will live on in the library’s collection.
