Room to Move: Dance Theater Workshop and Alternative Histories of Downtown Dance

About the project

April 16 – September 13, 2025

Room to Move explored the legacy of Dance Theater Workshop, the artist-run collective founded by Jeff Duncan in 1960s New York that became a launchpad for downtown dance. DTW offered emerging choreographers something rare: space, administrative support, subsidized documentation, and professional development, freeing artists to focus on creative experimentation. The workshop fostered careers that reshaped the field, including Mark Morris, Donald Byrd, Bebe Miller, and Bill T. Jones, and gave rise to the Bessie Awards. Drawing on archival materials, the exhibition examined how DTW’s model of holistic artist support remains relevant as artists continue to face challenges of funding, space, and equity.
