McMullan Posters: Gesture as Design
About the project
March 30 – June 11, 2011
The exhibition McMullan Posters: Gesture as Design, created by the Performing Arts Museum, celebrated James McMullan’s narrative illustrations and distinctive hand-lettering for Lincoln Center Theater. A prominent graphic artist for over three decades, James McMullan designs striking three-sheets, posters, and window cards that have illuminated an astonishing range of theatrical productions. As well as the published posters, the exhibition featured preliminary sketches, photographs, and watercolor and gouache renderings that illustrate the process of turning reality into memorable design.
