The New York City presentation of American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music was developed by the Performing Arts Museum in collaboration with the EMP Museum, the University of Washington, and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The exhibition featured the musical contributions of U.S. Latinos from the 1940s to the present, exploring the social history and individual creativity that produced stars like Tito Puente, Ritchie Valens, Celia Cruz, Carlos Santana, and Selena. Accompanying the exhibition was a display of materials on Latino music and dance from 1908 to 1940, focusing on popular, dance and concert music from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and South American in the early years of recorded sound and radio.
